Located in the heart of Ajaccio, the Miollis Citadel, whose foundation stone was laid in 1492 and which has continued to transform to this day, was a subject of an ambitious and unprecedented project of development and enhancement. Turning its back on the sea as well as in the city center, the Citadel is an unexplored setting of Ajaccio, a palimpsest of eras, architecture, and stories.
This 10,500 m2 place, built on a total area of two and a half hectares, is located in the midst of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The Citadel was built on a strategic site by the Genoese to effectively protect the city from maritime attacks. It originally consisted of a dungeon or Citadel (Castello) and a low speaker. The castle was built in 1492 under the authority of the Genoese Office of Saint-Georges. In 1553, when Sampiero and French troops led by Marshal de Thermes arrived, work was carried out to expand the Citadel. About thirty buildings were destroyed, including the Sainte-Croix church, the first cathedral in the Genoese city.
The Citadelle today is a local historical landmark with many local shops, squares, and other landmarks nearby for the tourist to see.
Boulevard Pascal Rossini is said to be one of the most attractive beach boulevards in all of Ajaccio, and it is located right close to the fortress. You will have wonderful views of the Bay of Ajaccio from the boulevard, as well as from the restaurants that are located along the promenade itself.
