Les Halles market in Avignon, also known as Les Halles d'Avignon, is a large undercover food market located in the heart of Avignon's walled medieval old town. Around 40 merchants sell wonderful French food and wine, as well as the occasional delicacy from further afield, at this Provencal market. It attracts Avignon locals, restaurant chefs, and a healthy number of tourists, and it opens at 6 a.m. If you go in the morning, you're likely to run into a river-cruise tour group eating macarons.
While the fruit is local and traditional, the structure in which it is stored is modern. Instead of a nice outside set of tables, expect a large covered market. Nonetheless, the food is superb and pleasant enough to compensate for the modern premises in which it is served. The northern facade of the building is covered in creepers and green plants and overlooks a lovely square.
