Sforzesco Castle, one of Milan's most well-known structures, was constructed as a fortification in the fourteenth century. One of the top museums in the city is now housed there. It was the first constructed stronghold in 1368. Later, it was expanded and transformed into a magnificent ducal palace, which was almost destroyed during the Golden Ambrosian Republic.
The Sforzesco family rebuilt the Castle, turning it into one of Italy's most opulent homes. Years later, when Spain and Austria were in power, the Castle was again used as a defense.
