Aazhimala, a lovely village in Vizhinjam, is home to a mystical intersection of the divine and the natural world. Aazhimala's beautiful coastline and lush landscape beckon visitors, and the site is also home to the famed Aazhimala Shiva Temple. The old temple that sits on the rock above the water is a spiritual beacon for miles around. The Aazhimala Siva Temple got its name because it is located on a narrow strip of land between two massive rock formations and the ocean. The word 'Aazhi' means 'sea' and 'Mala' means 'Hill.' Because it sits on the edge of the Arabian Sea, surrounded by picturesque cliffs, the name Aazhimala is perfect for the temple. Historically, it was known as the Aazhimala Pulinkudi Sree Mahadeva Temple due to the prevalence of tigers.
The temple's most recognizable feature is the 58-foot-tall concrete statue of Lord Shiva in his Gangadhareswara form. The huge structure, which depicts Shiva's hair blowing in the wind and holding the goddess Ganga, gives the temple a unique and enchanting air. The sight of the stunning Azhimala Lord Shiva Statue sends chills up and down your spine because of its massiveness and depiction. Sculptor P.S.Devadathan was only 29 when he completed making the statue and during the time it was unveiled. He devoted six years of his life to its creation. This Shiva statue in Aazhimala Temple is the tallest in all of Kerala. The statue's 3D structure and attention to detail are stunning.
