The Smithsonian Institution Building, also known as 'The Castle', is a landmark building located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., United States. It was a designated National Historic Landmark in 1965.


Designed by architect James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style. The building was made of red sandstone quarried from Seneca Creek, Maryland. It features many architectural details, such as turrets, battlements, and flying buttresses, which give it a medieval appearance.


The Smithsonian Castle serves as the headquarters for the administrative offices of the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, it is home to the main Smithsonian visitor center, which features engaging interactive displays and maps.
